The capital city has
become a hub for prestigious private secondary schools, serving the educational
needs of both local and international students. Be it in the rural or urban
part of the city, these schools are everywhere, distinguished by the curriculum
they run and their modes of operation. Let’s take a look at five of the really
prominent ones in the metropolis.

International School of Abuja (AISA)

AISA was founded in
1993. It is a day school serving pre-school through grade 12 classes, and is
situated in Durumi district.The school year runs from August to June, with just
two semesters. The first semester is from August to December and the second
semester is from January to June, with both expatriates and local teachers
coaching the students. The school is accredited by the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary Schools,
Pennsylvania, USA.
AISA is made up of the
Middle School, Grade 6 to 8 and the High School, Grade 9 to 12. The middle
school classes are exposed to physical activities, music, art and basic
knowledge of their host country. The high school classes are offered college
preparatory programs with the goal of getting them ready for admission into the
best universities in the world. 
There are about 34
classrooms, 2 music rooms, 2 arts rooms, a snack bar, a science laboratory, a
multipurpose hall, a computer laboratory, 41 smartboards, and swimming pool.
The school boast of
many community events such as Crafts sale, International Food Fair, the Fall
Carnival, Scavenger Hunts, and numerous sporting events.Students in athletics
have the opportunity to compete in the West African International Schools
Activities League.
The tuition fee is
between $16, 876 and $19, 360 for both middle and high school students.
Application form is about $654 and the Capital building feedevelopmental levy
paid once the form is submitted is $4, 500.

British International School

LBIS is located in the
heart of Gwarinpa, accessible to both local and foreign students. The school
offers both British and Nigerian curriculum with more than fifty teachers
training the students.
Educational excursions
and trips are undertaken yearly both locally and internationally. This is to
enable the students to learn in a fun and relaxed way and interact with people
from other countries. Extra-curricular activities include Orchestra club, Leadership
Academic club, Music, Arts and Crafts club to mention a few.
The students in Grade
10 to 12 are prepared for the check point examination organized by the
Cambridge University, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
organized by NECO, IGCSE organized by Cambridge, Senior Secondary Certificate
Examination organized by NECO and the West African Senior School Examination
organized by WASSCE. The SAT examination is optional.
The school fee is about
1.5 million naira per session, with a breakdown of 185, 000 naira per term, 25,
000 naira for educational resources and 5, 000 naira for incidental fees. The
application form for enrollment cost 25, 000 naira.

Jesuit College

LJC is a boarding
school located in Gidan Mangoro, Karu-Karshi road, in the capital city. It was
opened in 1996. The school is part of the worldwide family of the Jesuit
schools by the society of Jesus in Abuja, Nigeria. They follow the philosophy
derived from the writings of the founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola.
With about 600
students, the teachers coaching them are from the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)
with the Sisters of Holy Child Jesus. A few local teachers are also added to
the workforce.
The school is known for
their excellence in training the students academically in a very serene and
conducive environment. Students from the school are very morally conscious,
quick to separate the good from the bad.
There is a yearly
Inter-House Sports held in the school athletic fields, an open day event every
term which involve the interaction of both parents/guardians and the faculty
members, and other events.
The tuition fee is
about 2.8 million naira per annum. The admission form is about 8, 500 naira.

Community School

ICS is a day and
boarding school located in Utako, in the capital city. It runs an American
curriculum and it is a Christian school.
There are 48
air-conditioned classrooms, 3 science laboratory, 2 libraries, a gymnasium, 2
art studios, a cafeteria, and an E-library.
Aside academics, the
students are encouraged to join clubs such as Reading club, Press club, Choir,
Violin, Art, and the Chess clubs. Every session, several events are scheduled
along with the school programs such as, Parents’ night, Nigerian Day
celebration, Christmas program, Sports Day, Book Fair, Poetry Café, Music
Night, and Art and Photo Exhibition.
English proficiency is
necessary especially for transferred students. Those in high school classes
need to bring their junior school transcripts, certificate and letter of
recommendation before they will be considered for admission.
The tuition fee is
between $12, 933 and $20, 547 annually. The fees include lunch, bus,
stationaries, year book and field trips per session. Application fee is $212
and Registration fees for all classes is $2, 825.

International School

FIS is a day and a
boarding school located in Asokoro and Gudu. It was founded in the year 2001,
with over 432 students and 95 teaching and non-teaching staff members.
The school integrates
both the British and American system to produce a curriculum for the students
who are both local and foreign.
There are over 20
classrooms, science and ICT laboratories, sports center, music room, libraries,
swimming pool, and well equipped E-library.
The Year 7 to 9 classes
are tutored in 16 compulsory subjects per term and Year 10 to 12 take 10
subjects. The Year 12 prepares for their WASSCE immediately after the first
term examination. They are also primed for NECO, JAMB, International General
Certificate Secondary Education examination IGSCE, SAT and TOEFL.
The tuition fee is
about 1.5 million per annum. If a parent has more than one child in the school,
there is room for discount.
